Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement (Manual Tilt, Column Shift)

Removal Procedure
1. Caution: Refer to Restraint Systems in Service and Precautions.
Disable the SIR coil. Refer to Restraint Systems Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in Restraint Systems.
2. Remove the steering wheel from the column.
3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
4. Remove the wire harness assembly only.
5. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
6. Remove the linear shift assembly, the A/T shift lock control assembly, and the shift lever only.
7. Remove the tilt spring only.
8. If a steering shaft position sensor is present, remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:
1. The boot seal (1).
2. The steering shaft seal (2).
3. The sensor retainer (3).
4. The steering wheel position sensor (4).
5. The retaining ring (5).
9. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:
1. The boot seal (1)
2. The steering shaft seal (2)
3. The sensor retainer (3)
4. The retaining ring (4)
5. The seal (5)
10. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01.
11. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.
12. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).
13. Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.
Installation Procedure
1. Important: Use the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
Apply GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) to the race and upper shaft assembly.
2. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly.
3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.
4. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the tilt head assembly (1).
5. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column support assembly (2).
6. Important: Once the steering column support and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times, replace the steering column support.
Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.Stake the pivot pins in 3 places.
7. If a steering shaft position sensor is present, install the following parts to the steering column support assembly:
1. The retaining ring (5).
2. The steering wheel position sensor (4).
3. The sensor retainer (3).
4. The steering shaft seal (2).
5. The boot seal (1).
8. If a steering shaft position sensor is not used, install the following parts to the steering column support assembly:
1. The seal (5).
2. The retaining ring (4).
3. The sensor retainer (3).
4. The steering shaft seal (2).
5. The boot seal (1).
9. Caution: Refer to Restraint Systems Inflator Module Coil Caution in Service and Precautions.
Install the linear shift assembly, the A/T shift lock control assembly, and switch lever only.
10. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
11. Install the wire harness assembly only.
12. Install the tilt spring only.
13. Install the steering column into the vehicle.
14. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column.
15. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Restraint Systems Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in Restraint Systems.
