Lower Bearing and Steering Column - Jacket Replacement (Manual Tilt, Floor Shift)^ Tools Required

Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution. Vehicle Damage Warnings
1. Disable the SIR coil.
2. Remove the steering wheel from the column.
3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
4. Inspect the steering column for accident damage.
5. Remove the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly.
6. Remove the wire harness assembly only.
7. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
8. Remove the tilt spring.
9. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:
9.1. The boot seal (1)
9.2. The steering shaft seal (2)
9.3. The sensor retainer (3)
9.4. The steering wheel position sensor (1).
9.5. The retaining ring (5)
10. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J21854-01.
11. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.
12. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).
Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
13. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.
Installation Procedure
Important: Use the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
1. Apply GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) to the race and upper shaft assembly.
2. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly.
3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.
4. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the tilt head assembly (1).
5. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column support assembly (2).
Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.
6. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).
Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.
Stake the pins in 3 places.
7. Install the following parts onto the steering column support assembly:
7.1. The retaining ring (5)
7.2. The steering wheel position sensor (1).
7.3. The sensor retainer (3)
7.4. The steering shaft seal (2)
7.5. The boot seal (1)
Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Coil Caution in Service Precautions
8. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
9. Install the wire harness assembly only.
10. Install the tilt spring only.
11. Install the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly.
12. Install the steering column into the vehicle.
13. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column.
14. Enable the SIR system.
