Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement (Power Tilt\Telescope, Column Shift)

Removal Procedure
1. Caution: Refer to Restraint Systems in Service and Precautions.
Disable the SIR system. Refer to Restraint Systems Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in Restraint Systems.
2. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column.
3. Install the steering column into the vehicle.
4. Remove the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the A/T shift lock control only.
5. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
6. Remove the wire harness assembly only.
7. Remove the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only.
8. Remove the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only.
9. Remove 1 TORX(R) head screw from the tilt and telescope module.
10. Slide the control module out from the steering column.
11. Remove the following components:
1. The boot seal (5)
2. The steering shaft seal (4)
3. The sensor retainer (3)
4. The sensor locator (2)
12. Remove the steering wheel position sensor (1).
13. Remove 1 TORX(R) head screw from the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.
14. Remove the bracket.
15. Gently pry the lower shield assembly off of the steering column.
16. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01.
17. Unscrew the lead screw.
18. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.
19. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).
20. Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.
21. Remove 2 TORX(R) screws from the dampener.
22. Remove and discard 4 support screws from the steering column support.
23. Remove the steering column support.
24. Inspect the steering column for accident damage.
Installation Procedure
1. Notice: Install the steering column support and secure using 4 support screws.
Tighten the screws to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
2. Install 2 TORX(R) screws into the dampener.
^ Tighten the screws to 1.5 Nm (13 inch lbs.).
3. Important: Use the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
Apply GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) to the race and upper shaft assembly.
4. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly.
5. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.
6. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the tilt head assembly (1).
7. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).
8. Screw in the lead screw.
9. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516).Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.
10. Align and snap the lower shield assembly onto the steering column.
11. Install the bracket.
12. Install 1 TORX(R) head screw to the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.
^ Tighten the screw to 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.).
13. Install the following components:
1. The steering wheel position sensor (1).
2. The sensor locator (2)
3. The sensor retainer (3)
4. The steering shaft seal (4)
5. The boot seal (5)
14. Slide the control module into position.
15. Install 1 retaining screw.
^ Tighten the screw to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
16. Caution: Refer to Restraint Systems Inflator Module Coil Caution in Service and Precautions.
Install the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only.
17. Install the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only.
18. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
19. Install the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the A/T shift lock control only.
20. Install the wire harness assembly only.
21. Install the steering column into the vehicle.
22. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column.
23. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Restraint Systems Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in Restraint Systems.
