CIRCUIT/SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The throttle actuator control (TAC) system uses two throttle position (TP) sensors to monitor the throttle position. The TP sensors 1 and 2 are located within the throttle body assembly. Each sensor has a signal circuit and share a 5-Volt reference and low reference circuit.

Two processors are also used to monitor the TAC system data. Both processors are located within the ECM. Each signal circuit provides both processors with a signal voltage proportional to throttle plate movement. Both processors monitor each other's data to verify that the indicated TP calculation is correct. Refer to Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) System Description.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC

DTCs P0120, P0122, P0123, P0220, P0222, or P0223
- DTCs P0601, P0602, P0603, P0604, P0606, P060D, P062F, P0641, P0651 are not set.
- The system voltage is more than 5.23 volts.
- The ignition is in the Unlock/Accessory or Run position.
- DTCs P0120, P0122, P0123, P0220, P0222, P0223 run continuously when the above conditions are met.

DTC P2135
- DTCs P0120, P0122, P0123, P0220, P0222, P0223, P0641, or P0651 are not set.
- The system voltage is more than 5.23 volts.
- The ignition is in the Unlock/Accessory or Run position.
- DTC P2135 runs continuously when the above conditions are met.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC

DTC P0120
TP sensor 1 voltage is less than 0.27 volt or more than 4.67 volts for more than 0.5 second.

DTC P0122
The engine control module (ECM) detects that the TP sensor 1 voltage is less than 0.27 volt for more than 0.4 second.

DTC P0123
The ECM detects that the TP sensor 1 voltage is more than 4.67 volts for more than 0.4 second.

DTC P0220
The TP sensor 2 voltage is less than 0.31 volt or more than 4.7 volts for more than 0.5 second.

DTC P0222
The ECM detects that the TP sensor 2 voltage is less than 0.31 volt for more than 0.4 second.

DTC P0223
The ECM detects that the TP sensor 2 voltage is more than 4.7 volts for more than 0.4 second.

DTC P2135
The difference between the TP sensor 1 and TP sensor 2 exceeds a predetermined value for more than 2 seconds.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS
- The control module illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when the diagnostic runs and fails.
- The control module records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The control module stores this information in the Freeze Frame and/or the Failure Records.
- The control module commands the TAC system to operate in the Reduced Engine Power mode.
- A message center or an indicator displays Reduced Engine Power.
- Under certain conditions the control module commands the engine OFF.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE MIL/DTC
- The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.
- A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.
- A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic.
- Clear the MIL and the DTC with a scan tool.

CIRCUIT/SYSTEM VERIFICATION

IMPORTANT: If you cannot duplicate the condition, operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records.

- With the ignition ON, observe the TP sensor 1 for a voltage parameter between 0.27-4.67 volts, with the accelerator pedal in the released position.
- With the ignition ON, observe the TP sensor 2 for a voltage parameter between 0.31-4.7 volts, with the accelerator pedal in the released position with a scan tool.
- With a scan tool observe the TP sensors 1 and 2 parameter. The scan tool should indicate Agree.

CIRCUIT/SYSTEM TESTING
1. Clear the DTCs with the scan tool. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC, or within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records.
2. With the ignition ON, use a scan tool to observe the TP sensor 1 voltage with the accelerator pedal in the released position. The voltage should be between 0.27-4.67 volts.
- If more than 4.67 volts, test the low reference for an open. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
- If less than 0.27 volts, test the TP sensor 1 signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
3. With the ignition ON, use a scan tool to observe the TP sensor 2 voltage with the accelerator pedal in the released position. The voltage should be between 0.31-4.7 volts.
- If more than 4.7 volts, test the low reference circuit for an open. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
- If less than 0.31 volts, test the TP sensor 2 signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
4. With the ignition ON, use a scan tool to observe the DTCs.
- If DTC P0120 is the only code set, replace the ECM.
- If DTC P0220 is the only code set, replace the ECM.
- If any other codes are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle. Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions
5. With the ignition OFF, disconnect the throttle body harness connector. With the ignition ON, use a scan tool to verify the TP sensor 1 voltage is less than 0.1 volts.
- If more than 0.1 volts, test the TP sensor 1 signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
6. With the throttle body harness connector still disconnected, use a scan tool to verify the TP sensor 2 voltage is greater than 4.8 volts.
- If less than 4.8 volts, test the TP sensor 2 signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
7. With the ignition ON, measure for a voltage between 4.8-5.2 volts from the 5-Volt reference circuit to a ground.
- If more than 5.2 volts, test the 5-Volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
- If less than 4.8 volts, test the 5-Volt reference circuit for an open or a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
8. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the signal circuit and the 5-Volt reference circuit of the TP sensor 1, use a scan tool to verify the TP sensor 1 voltage is greater than 4.8 volts.
- If less than 4.8 volts, test the TP sensor 1 signal circuit for an open, or a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
9. Connect a test lamp between the signal circuit of TP sensor 2 and a ground, use a scan tool to verify the TP sensor 2 voltage is less than 0.1 volts.
- If more than 0.1 volts, test the TP sensor 2 signal circuit for an open, or short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.

IMPORTANT: The test lamp is used to load the circuit and should not illuminate.

10. If all circuits test normal, replace the throttle body.

CIRCUIT/SYSTEM TESTING FOR DTC P2135 ONLY
1. With the ignition OFF, disconnect the throttle body and ECM harness connectors, with a DMM, measure for less than 5 ohms on each throttle position sensor circuit.
- If more than 5 ohms, repair the high resistance on the affected circuit. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
- If less than 5 ohms, test for a short between TP sensor 1 signal circuit and TP sensor 2 signal circuit.
2. If all circuits test normal, replace the throttle body.
