Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Replacement (Power Tilt\ Telescope, Column Shift)

- J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Removal Procedure





1. Caution: Refer to Restraint System Caution in Service Precautions.

Disable the SIR system. Refer to Restraint System Disabling and Enabling Zone 3.
2. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column.
3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
4. Remove the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly.
5. Remove the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the A/T shift lock control only.
6. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
7. Remove the tilt spring.
8. Remove the wire harness assembly only.
9. Remove the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only.
10. Remove the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only.
11. Remove 1 TORX head screw from the tilt and telescope module.
12. Slide the control module out from the steering column.





13. Remove the following components:
1 The boot seal (5)
2 The steering shaft seal (4)
3 The sensor retainer (3)
4 The sensor locator (2)
14. Remove the steering wheel position sensor (1). TORX88846

15. Remove 1 TORX head screw from the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.
16. Remove the bracket.





17. Gently pry the lower shield assembly off of the steering column.





18. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01.





19. Unscrew the lead screw.





20. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.





21. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).





22. Remove the bearing assembly from the tilt head assembly.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the bearing assembly into the tilt head assembly.





2. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the tilt head assembly (1).





3. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).





4. Screw in the lead screw.





5. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516). Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.





6. Align and snap the lower shield assembly onto the steering column.





7. Install the bracket.
8. Install 1 TORX head screw to the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.
Tighten the screw to 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.).





9. Install the following components:
1. The steering wheel position sensor (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering.
2. The sensor locator (2)
3. The sensor retainer (3)
4. The steering shaft seal (4)
5. The boot seal (5)





10. Slide the control module into position.
11. Install 1 retaining screw.
Tighten the screw to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).

12. Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Coil Caution in Service Precautions.

Install the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only.
13. Install the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only.
14. Install the tilt spring.
15. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
16. Install the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the A/T shift lock control only.
17. Install the wire harness assembly only.
18. Install the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly.
19. Install the steering column into the vehicle.
20. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column.
21. Enable the SIR system.
