ECM - Some Incorrectly Misabeled/Poor Performance

83chevy06

Number: 83-I-13

Section: VIt
Date: Nov. 1982
Subject: INCORRECT LABELING OF SOME

1982-1/2 AND 1983 ECMS

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

Recently, there have been two (2) separate and different instances of ECM'S being Mislabeled.

The first condition concerns only service ECM's in WDDGM stock. The two (2) service units involved are: 1225550, which is used on 5.0L dual EFI Firebirds; and, 1225570, used on 2.5L EFI Citation and Celebrity. The mislabeling could cause the single injector ECM (1225570) to be installed into a dual injector vehicle.

MANUFACTURING CODE:

If this happens, no trouble codes will be set. The car will run poorly because only one (1) injector will be operating. The correct identity of the ECM can be determined by checking the manufacturing code on the side of the ECM. Refer to Figure 1 for an example of the manufacturing code. The correct information for each service number is:
SERVICE
NO. MANUFACTURING CODE ENGINE APPLICATION

Dual
1225550 015 (First Three Digits) Injector - 5.0L V8

Single
1225570 144 (First Three Digits) Injector - 2.5L L4

The second instance of mislabeling concerns 1983 ECM 1226100 being labeled as 1982-1/2 ECM 1225610. This mislabeling has occurred only on production units and not service units. There will be no driveability conditions noticed. In the event of ECM replacement, the PROM retainer from 1983 ECM 1226100 will fit into 1982-1/2 ECM 1225610. Again, use the manufacturing code for proper identification.
