Steering Column - Without Key Release - Disassemble
1. Remove column mounting bracket. Set bracket aside to protect breakaway capsules.
2. Mount column in a vise by using column holding fixture or by clamping column by weld nuts.
3. Remove steering wheel, wire protector and cover.
4. Remove turn signal lever and tilt release lever. Depress hazard warning switch and remove knob.
5. Remove shift lever from bowl.
6. Inspect steering shaft to determine type of thread used for steering shaft nut. Metric type shafts can be identified by a groove located in area of steering wheel locating splines, while shaft with American type threads do not have this groove. If shaft has metric type threads, the forcing screw of Lock Plate Compressor Tool J-23653 must be removed and replaced with the metric forcing screw J-23653-4 before installing lock plate compressor tool on steering shaft. Compress lock plate using lock plate compressor tool, then pry snap ring from shaft groove and discard ring. Remove lock plate compressor tool and lock plate. The lock plate is under considerable spring pressure. Do not attempt to remove it without using the compressor tool.
7. Remove shaft lock plate, cancelling cam, spring and the turn signal switch.
8. Remove ignition switch lock and remove buzzer switch by pulling straight out. Do not pull on switch terminals. Use a bent wire or needle nose pliers to pull on buzzer switch clip.
9. Remove housing cover.
10. Install tilt release lever and place column in ``full up'' position. Using a screwdriver that fits into slot opening of spring retainer, press approximately 3/16 inch and turn approximately 1/8 turn until ears align with grooves in housing and remove spring and guide.
11. Place column in neutral position and push upper steering shaft in sufficiently to remove steering shaft inner race seat and inner race.
12. Remove upper flange pinch bolt, lower steering shaft flange, no-back washer (if used), spacer, spring, clip and the bearing adapter assembly from lower end of mast jacket.
13. Remove ignition switch and neutral-start switch.
14. Using pivot bearing removing tool J-21854-1, remove two pivot pins.
15. Place column in ``full up'' position and disengage lock shoes. Remove bearing housing assembly by pulling upward to extend rack fully down and moving housing assembly to the left to disengage rack from actuator.
16. Remove steering shaft assembly from upper end.
17. Disassemble shaft assembly by removing centering spheres, anti-lash spring and support assembly.
18. Using a screwdriver, remove shift tube retaining ring and thrust washer.
19. Using shift tube remover tool J-23072, remove shift tube from bowl. Care should be taken not to jam lower shift lever into ``T'' slot on lower end of mast jacket while forcing it out of shift tube.
20. Remove shift tube assembly from mast jacket, lock plate and wave washer.
21. Remove bowl from mast jacket, shift lever spring from bowl by winding up the spring with pliers and pulling out.
