For side gear removal, refer to Standard Differential.
1. Remove ring gear bolts, then using a brass drift tap gear from case, Fig. 10.
2. Remove cross pin retainers, then using punch and hammer, tap cross pin from case.
3. Assemble adapter plate from tool J-23781 on 1982 models or J-34174 on 1984---87 models into bottom side gear, then install threaded adapter plate into top side gear. Thread forcing screw into threaded adapter, and tighten until snug. This will force dished spacers to collapse and allow a loose condition in the case.Figs. 11 and 12.
4. Using a .020 inch feeler gauge, push out both pinion gear spherical washers, then back off forcing screw.
5. Using suitable tools, rotate case assembly until pinion gears can be removed. Remove pinion and differential gears, then the top side gear and clutch pack. Keep stack of plates and discs in order they were removed from case.
6. Remove retaining clips from plate tangs then separate plates and discs. Note position of plates and discs before disassembling.

7. Lubricate, then install dished spacer, discs and plates on side gear splines, Fig. 13. When lubricating parts during assembly always use special limited slip differential lubricant.
8. Install retaining clips on plate tangs, ensuring clips are completely seated on tangs.
9. Install side gear and clutch packs in case, ensuring retaining clips are properly seated in case recesses. Assemble adapter plate from tool J-23781 on 1982 models or J-34174 on 1984---87 models onto side gear, Figs. 14 and 15.
10. Install plates and discs on other differential gear and install in same manner.
11. Install threaded adapter plate into side gear. Thread forcing screw into threaded adapter, and tighten until snug. This will hold clutch packs in position.
12. Position pinion gears in case. Rotate differential case with suitable tool until pinion gear holes align with case bores.
13. Lubricate and install spherical washers, using a screwdriver. Ensure pinion gear and spherical washer holes are aligned with case bores.
14. Remove tools, then lubricate and install cross pin shaft and install retainers.
15. Do not install ring gear at this time. The ring gear will be installed during Final Assembly & Backlash Adjustment.
