Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Starter Solenoid: Testing and Inspection

FREE SPEED TEST
Refer to ``Delco-Remy Starters'' for Free Speed Test.

PINION CLEARANCE CHECK
1. Disconnect field coil connector from solenoid terminal and insulate carefully.
2. Connect one 12 volt battery lead to solenoid switch terminal and other lead to starter motor frame.
3. Flash a jumper lead momentarily from solenoid motor terminal to starter motor frame. This will shift pinion into cranking position until battery is disconnected.
4. Push pinion back as far as possible to take up any movement, then check pinion clearance using a feeler gauge. Pinion clearance should be .020---.080 inch. If clearance is not within limits, check for improper installation or worn parts and replace as necessary. Clearance may be adjusted by adding or removing shims located between the switch and front bracket. Adding shims decreases amount of movement. Shims are available in thicknesses of .010 and .020 inch.
