Fuel Filter: Service and Repair
Diesel Fuel Filter:
REPLACEMENT
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect heater and sensor assembly wiring at connector.
3. Disconnect heater and sensor assembly to main hose.
4. Remove filter element by turning counterclockwise, using filter wrench J-22700 or equivalent, being careful not to spill fuel from element.
5. Drain fuel from filter element into a suitable container.
6. Remove heater and sensor assembly from bottom of old filter element.
7. Apply a thin film of diesel fuel to water sensor O-ring.
8. Install heater and sensor assembly on bottom of new filter and tighten.
9. Wipe filter body sealing surface clean.
10. Apply a thin film of diesel filter to gasket on new filter element.
11. Install filter element and turn clockwise until gasket on element contacts sealing surface on main body.
12. Continue turning an additional 2/3 of a turn after element contacts sealing surface.
13. Connect heater and sensor assembly wiring.
14. Disconnect fuel outlet hose from injector pump and place in a suitable container.
15. Fill filter with fuel by operating the priming pump handle several times.
16. Reconnect fuel outlet hose to injector pump.
17. Start engine and check for leaks.
