Assemble

1. Inspect parking pawl for cracks, burrs or damage.

2. Inspect parking pawl shaft for damage and freeness of fit

3. Inspect parking pawl return spring for distortion or damage.

4. Inspect detent lever and actuator for damage or cracks.

5. Inspect manual shaft for damage.

6. Install parking pawl, pawl shaft, plug and retainer, then the pawl return spring.

7. Connect detent lever to actuator, then install actuator under parking pawl.

8. Install manual shaft and seal.

9. Install nut on shaft, then install inside detent lever pin.

10. Install parking lock bracket with retaining bolts.

11. Inspect rear band and thrust washer for wear or damage.

12. Install selective thrust washer selected during "Rear Endplay Check" in disassembly procedure.

13. Install output shaft to case thrust washer, then the rear band.

14. Install tool J-21795-1 or equivalent on mainshaft.

15. With transmission in vertical position, align bolt hole in center support with hole in case and carefully lower into case.







16. Insert tool J-23093 or equivalent into center support direct clutch passage through case, then apply pressure to tool J-23093 in direction of arrow, Fig. 37, seating center support splines against case splines.

17. Install case to center support bolt and torque to specifications, then install snap ring.

18. Inspect intermediate clutch plates for wear, pitting, flaking or cracks in lining.

19. Inspect flat intermediate clutch plates for discoloration, scoring or cracks.

20. Inspect backing plate for burrs or dirt.

21. Inspect front band for wear, pitting, flaking or cracks in lining.

22. Install waved plate, if equipped.







23. Install steel and composition plates alternately.

24. Install intermediate clutch backing plate and snap ring.

25. Install direct clutch assembly onto intermediate clutch, then install front band.

26. Install forward clutch on oil pump assembly.

27. Check piston and clutch operation by applying air to forward clutch passage in pump.

28. Install forward clutch assembly with turbine shaft into transmission.

29. Install oil pump cover to case gasket on transmission case.

30. Install oil pump assembly in transmission case.

31. Install oil pump retaining bolts, except the one at the 10 o'clock position, and torque to specifications. If turbine shaft cannot be rotated as pump assembly is being pulled into place, the forward and/or direct clutch housing have not been installed properly index with all the clutch plates. This condition must be corrected before pump assembly is fully installed.

32. Repeat "Rear Unit End Plate Check" and "Front Unit Endplay Check" as performed during disassembly.

33. Inspect speed sensor, if equipped, for porosity, cracks or damage.

34. Inspect O-ring and O-ring groove for nicks or damage.

35. Inspect speed sensor bore in case for porosity, scoring or damage.

36. Install governor into case.

37. Install governor cover and gasket with attaching bolts.

38. Lubricate speed sensor bore in case with petroleum jelly.

39. Install speed sensor, if equipped, with new O-ring into case. Properly align speed sensor before installing into case to prevent damage to rotor and/or sensor.

40. Install sensor retaining bolt

41. Repeat "Band Apply Pin Check" as performed during disassembly.

42. Remove retaining ring from rear band apply pin and inspect:

a. Accumulator pistons for porosity, damage or ring groove damage.

b. Seals for nicks or cuts.

c. Cover for porosity, scoring or damage.

d. Springs for distortion.

e. Pin for wear.

f. Servo bore for wear or scoring.

43. Install rear accumulator spring.

44. Install rear servo spring retainer, rear servo spring and servo washer on rear band apply pin.

45. Install inner and outer accumulator piston oil seals on accumulator piston and place on rear band apply pin assembly.

46. Install rear servo piston seal on rear servo piston and press onto rear band apply pin, then install retaining ring.

47. Install assembly in bore, then install cover, gasket and retaining bolts.

48. Inspect front servo piston for porosity, damage or ring groove damage.

49. Inspect piston pin for wear.

50. Inspect spring for distortion.

51. inspect servo bore for wear or scoring.

52. Install front servo piston spring and retainer.

53. Install washer, piston pin and piston, ensuring tapered end contacts band.

54. Install front servo assembly into case.


Check Ball Location:






55. Install six check balls in case.

56. Install spacer plate to case gasket, valve body spacer plate and valve body to spacer plate gasket, then the solenoid gasket and solenoid assembly, tightening solenoid attaching bolt finger tight.

57. Connect solenoid electrical connector.

58. Install front accumulator piston spring.

59. Using tool J-21885 or equivalent, install front accumulator piston and retainer ring.

60. Install governor screen, pointed end up.

61. Install governor oil pipes, then the control valve assembly with attaching bolts.

62. Install detent spring and roller assembly with attaching bolt.

63. Install intake pipe, O-ring and filter.

64. Install filter spacer, if equipped, and attaching bolt.

65. Install 9asket on oil pan, then install oil pan with attaching bolt and conical washer assemblies1 torquing to specifications.

66. Inspect case extension assembly bearings, spacer and bushings for wear or damage.

67. Using tool J-214426 or equivalent, install new rear seal.

68. Install extension to case seal.

69. Install new gasket on extension, then install extension on case, torquing attaching bolts to specifications.

70. Using tool J-24466, or equivalent, and known good modulator, inspect modulator as follows:

a. Place gage between modulators and apply pressure to both.

b. If indicator line moves out of view, replace modulator.

71. Inspect modulator valve for nicks or damage.

72. Inspect modulator valve bore in case for burrs, porosity or scoring.

73. Install modulator valve into case, small end first

74. Install new O-ring seal into case.

75. Install modulator assembly into case, then install retainer and attaching bolt, torquing to specifications.
