Bulletin Covers:
The reaction carrier and input carrier pinion gear to carrier end play specification has been changed for service. Previous specification was 0.23 to 0.61 mm (0.009 to 0.024 inches). The new specification is 0.23 to 0.77 mm (0.009 to 0.030 inches).
Figure 1:
Service Procedures: (Figure 1)
INSPECT:
(1) Reaction carrier assembly for excess pinion gear end play 0.23 to 0.77 mm (0.009 to 0.024 in). Check with a feeler gage. Check pinion gear and internal gear teeth for damage.
(2) Input carrier to reaction carrier lube dam for cracks or excess wear.
(3) Input carrier for excess pinion gear end play 0.23 to 0.77 mm (0.009 to 0.030 in). Check with feeler gage.
MEASURE:
The distance between the carrier housing and closest pinion washer. If the distance exceeds 0.77 mm (0.030 in), replace the carrier assembly (this specification pertains to both bronze to steel and steel to steel carrier applications).
IMPORTANT: DO NOT attempt to rebuild the input or reaction carrier. Attempts to do so could effect the durability of the transaxle.
Figure 2:
New Input Carrier Build: (Figure 2)
Double steel pinion washers have replaced the previously used bronze and steel washer combination used to space the pinion gear from the input carrier housing. The new double steel combination can service all models back to the 1984 SOP model year.
Date Of Production Change:
The steel to steel input carrier assembly was implemented into production on both the 4T60 and 4T60-E transaxles during the week of April 15, 1991 (Julian Date 098).
