Subject:
SHIFT LEVER RATTLES ON STEERING COLUMN

Model and Year:
1990-92 M/L VANS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Some owners of 1990 - 1992 M/L vans with a four-speed automatic transmission (RPO MX0) may comment about the shift lever on the steering column rattling and/or having greater than desired movement while driving.

The rattling condition and/or additional movement in the shift lever may be caused by the bushing not fitting correctly in the shift lever hole where the retaining pin goes through the assembly on the steering column.

This condition may be corrected by replacing the current shift lever assembly with a redesigned shift lever (P/N 15692370 without tilt wheel or P/N 15692371 with tilt wheel) which has a new style bushing in it.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the pivot pin (Figure 1, "30") from the bowl assembly.

2. Remove the shift lever (Figure 1, "23") from the bowl assembly. Be careful not to lose spring (Figure 1, "31"), or bushing (Figure 1, "29").

3. Install the redesigned shift lever (P/N 15692370 without tilt wheel or P/N 15692371 with tilt wheel) (Figure 1, 23) on the steering column.

4. Install the pivot pin (Figure 1, "30").

5. Check all positions for positive engagement of the shift gate.
