EGR valve loose or sticking Check EGR system. See EXHAUST GAS RE-CIRCULATION
plunger, flange gasket leaking, or SYSTEM in TESTING PROCEDURES.
solenoid valves malfunctioning



Ignition timing Check Ignition Timing. See ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES
in TESTING PROCEDURES.



Restricted exhaust system Check for a restriction in the exhaust system. See
CATALYTIC CONVERTER in TESTING PROCEDURES.



Idle speed too low Check idle speed or Idle Air Control (IAC). See
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES in EMISSIONS.



Vacuum leak Inspect vacuum hoses for
routing and damaged lines.
Check intake manifold area.
