Surge, Hesitation, Stall on Acceleration
Engine hesitates or stumbles on acceleration, sometimes stalling. This condition can occur at any speed, but primarily from a stop. Vehicle may also experience a surge or rise and fall of engine speed at cruise or steady throttle.
POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION
EGR malfunction, Check EGR system. See EXHAUST GAS RE-CIRCULATION
flange gasket leaking, SYSTEM in TESTING PROCEDURES.
excessive backpressure, or
loose valve
Spark timing Check Spark Controls (EST, ESC, etc...).
Air management system Check Air Injection system. See AIR INJECTION SYSTEM

Air inlet restriction Check air inlet.
Faulty canister purge, or Check Evaporative system. See EVAPORATIVE CONTROL
liquid fuel in carbon canister SYSTEM in TESTING PROCEDURES.
Ignition timing Check Ignition Timing. See ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES
in EMISSIONS.
Restricted exhaust system Check for a restriction in the exhaust system. See CATALYTIC
CONVERTER in TESTING PROCEDURES.
Poor or contaminated fuel Recommend higher grade fuel.
