Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

Fuel Filter:

Quick-Connect Fittings:

REMOVAL
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
3. Disconnect the filter attaching screw and filter.

NOTE: If the nylon fuel feed or return connecting lines become kinked, and cannot be straightened, they must be replaced.

4. Grasp the filter and one nylon fuel connecting line fitting. Twist the quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Repeat with the other fitting.

WARNING: Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.

^ Using compressed air, blow out the dirt from the quick-connect fittings at both ends of the filter.

5. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings:

^ Squeeze the plastic tabs of the male end connector and pull the connection apart. Repeat for the other end of the filter.

6. Remove the fuel filter.

INSTALLATION

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury:

^ Before installing a new filter, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter and the fuel level meter assembly. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. (During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated).
^ If a new fuel filter or filter line is nicked, scratched or damaged during installation, it must be replaced.

1. Remove the protective caps from the new filter.
2. Install the new plastic connector retainers on the filter inlet and outlet tubes.

^ Install in the same positions as on the old filter.

3. To connect the quick connect fittings:

a. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube ends of the filter and of the fuel level meter assembly.
b. Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap in place.
c. Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure they are secure.

4. Secure the fuel filter on the frame with the fuel filter attaching screw.
5. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.
