Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

REMOVAL:

1. Raise vehicle.
2. Remove exhaust hangers - front and rear of muffler and behind converter.
3. Remove stabilizer bar at control arm - rotate.
4. Remove exhaust pipe from manifold.
5. Place jackstands (one on each side) under rear axle, just forward of lower shock mount.

WARNING: If shock bolts are removed without supporting rear axle, personal injury could result.

6. Remove shock bolts.
7. Lower rear axle. (Lower axle no more than 4 inches to avoid damage to brake hoses.)
8. Lower exhaust.

Converter Cut Locations:






9. Cut pipe just behind rear converter weld.
10. On bench, cut pipe just ahead of front converter weld.

Catalyst Configuration:






INSTALLATION:

1. Install exhaust pipe and tighten manifold nuts to 25 N-m (18 lb. ft.).
2. Install service pipe on exhaust pipe - push forward as far as possible. Tighten Nuts to 31 N-m (23 lb. ft.).
3. Install converter and front clamp. DO NOT tighten.
4. Slip intermediate pipe into converter with clamp. DO NOT tighten.
5. Install hanger bolt on front of muffler. Tighten bolt to 47 N-m (35 lb. ft.).
6. Install rear muffler hanger. Tighten bolt to 47 N-m (35 lb. ft.).
7. Install intermediate pipe hanger. Tighten bolt to 25 N-m (18 lb. ft.).
8. Align converter flanges parallel with underbody and center converter within heat shield.
9. Install shock bolts.
10. Remove jackstands.
11. Install stabilizer bar to control arm.
12. Lower vehicle
