Drivetrain - Front Axle Seals Leak

Group Ref.: Drive Axle
Bulletin No.: 364302
Date: February, 1994

SUBJECT:
FRONT AXLE SEALS LEAK (REPLACE SEALS AND AXLE SHAFTS)

MODELS:
1991-93 CHEVROLET AND GMC K1, 2, 3 TRUCKS

CONDITION:

Some owners may comment that one or both front differential output shaft seals leak (Figure 1, Item 3).

CAUSE:

Differential output shaft (Figure 1. Item 1) surface finish may not be correct. This may cause premature seal wear and leaks.

CORRECTION:

When replacing a leaking output shaft seal (Figure 1, Item 3), the output shaft (Figure 1. Item 1) should be inspected. If the shaft is rough or the prior seal lasted less than 20,000 miles, the shaft should also be replaced.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Inspect the shaft surface finish where the seal contacts the shaft. This area should be smooth with no roughness. If the shaft feels rough when dragging a finger nail over the area, it should be replaced. The shaft should also be replaced if the prior seal started leaking within 20,000 miles.

For right shaft and seal replace, refer to the appropriate year C/K Truck Service Manual, Section 4C - Front Axle, Shaft and Axle Tube Assembly Replacement.

For left shaft and seal replace, refer to the appropriate year C/K Truck Service Manual, Section 4C - Front Axle, Output Shaft Replacement.
