Reverse Idler Gear

Removal and Disassembly
1. Remove idler gear shaft attaching bolt, cover attaching bolts, stud, then cover and gasket. Note bolt length and stud location.
2. Remove reverse idler shaft plug using tool No. J 37107-1 or equivalent, which must penetrate plug at the center.
3. Remove reverse idler gear shaft by using a bolt threaded in end of shaft, then idler gear and bearing assembly from rear of case.
4. Remove bearing assembly from gear.

Inspection
Clean parts in a suitable a solvent. Check parts for damage or wear.

Assemble & Installation
1. Install bearing assembly into gear and lubricate with transmission oil.
2. Install reverse idler gear and bearing assembly into rear of transmission case.
3. Install reverse idler shaft into rear case. Insert small end of shaft first.
4. Install reverse idler gear cover gasket and cover, idler shaft bolt with seal, then cover bolts and stud. Torque attaching bolts to 18 ft. lbs.
5. Install reverse idler gear plug, install plug flush with rear case.
