Removal and Replacement

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION


Tools Required:
^ J-28467-A Engine Support Fixture
^ J-35944 Oil Cooler Flushing Tool

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air intake duct.
3. Shift linkage from transaxle.
4. Vacuum modulator vacuum line at modulator.
5. Wiring connectors:
^ TCC connector.
^ Park/Neutral position switch.
^ Shift solenoid connector.

IMPORTANT
^ When servicing requires that the "T" latch type wiring connector be disconnected from the switch, care must be taken to ensure proper reassembly of both the connector and the "T" latch. Failure to do so may result in intermittent loss of switch functions.





6. Install J-28467-A engine support fixture.
7. Top two transaxle to engine bolts.
8. Rubber hose from transaxle to vent pipe.
9. Remaining upper engine to transaxle bolts.
10. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
11. Both tire and wheel assemblies.
12. Right and left splash shields.
13. Both front ABS wheel speed sensors and harness from left side suspension support.
14. Both ball joints from control arms.
15. Left stabilizer shaft link pin bolt.
16. Left stabilizer shaft frame bushing clamp nuts.
17. Left suspension support assembly.
18. Both drive axles.





19. Engine to transaxle brace.
20. Starter.
21. Transaxle converter cover.
22. Heater core hose pipe brace to transaxle nut and bolt.
23. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.
^ Using a scribe, mark the flywheel to torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly.

24. Oil level indicator and fill tube.
25. Transaxle cooler pipes. Plug to prevent leakage.
26. Vehicle speed sensor.
27. Vacuum reserve tank.
28. Position transaxle jack.





29. Transaxle mount to body bolts.





30. Remaining engine to transaxle bolts.
31. Transaxle.

INSPECT
^ For inspection and overhaul procedures refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.

CLEAN
^ Transaxle cooler and lines should be flushed with J-35944 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement or the torque converter, pump or case.


INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Place a thin film of chassis grease GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent on the torque converter pilot hub.
^ Make sure to properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.

2. Position transaxle in vehicle.
3. Lower engine to transaxle bolts.
4. Transaxle mount to body bolts. Remove transaxle jack.
5. Transaxle cooler pipes.
6. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.

Tighten
^ All bolts to 62 N.m (46 lbs. ft.) Hand start and tighten net slot bolt first. Hand start and tighten the two remaining bolts.

7. Oil level indicator and fill tube.
8. Vacuum reserve tank.
9. Starter.
10. Transaxle converter cover.
11. Vehicle speed sensor.
12. Drive axles.
13. Left suspension support assembly.
14. Left stabilizer shaft frame hushing nuts.
15. Stabilizer shaft link pin bolt.
16. Engine to transaxle brace.
17. Both ball joints to control arms.
18. Connect ABS wheel speed sensor harnesses.
19. Right and left side splash shields.
20. Heater core pipe brace to transaxle nut and bolt.
21. Both tire and wheel assemblies.
22. Lower vehicle.
23. Upper engine to transaxle bolts.
24. Shift linkage to transaxle.
25. Wiring connectors:
^ TCC connector.
^ Park/Neutral start and back-up lamp switch.

26. Wiring harness and nut securing it to transaxle.
27. Remove Engine Support Fixture J-28467-A.
28. Rubber hose to transaxle vent pipe.
29. Vacuum modulator vacuum line.
30. Air intake duct.
31. Negative battery cable.
32. Transaxle oil.


ADJUST
^ Shift linkage.
