Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation

The Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch indicates to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when the transmission is in park, neutral or drive. This information is used for the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve operation.

CAUTION: Vehicle should not be driven with park/neutral position switch disconnected, as idle quality will be affected and a possible false Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 24 (Vehicle speed Sensor) may set.

The PNP switch is part of the neutral/start and backup light switch assembly. Refer to CHART C-1A for PNP switch check.
