Starter Motor: Service and Repair




STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT

Note: Never operate the starter motor more than 30 seconds at a time without pausing to allow it to cool for at least 2 minutes. Overheating, caused by too much cranking, will damage the starter motor.


REAR WHEEL DRIVE PICKUP MODELS












Remove

1. Negative battery cable.
2. Front exhaust pipe. Refer to SECTION 6F.
3. Brace rod from front of engine to bellhousing (2.2L).
4. Wires from the starter solenoid.
5. Attaching bracket to the engine mount bolt (2.2L only).
6. Starter to the engine block bolts.
7. Starter and shims (if equipped) from the vehicle.
8. Bracket from the starter (if necessary).
9. Shield from the starter (4.3L only).

Install

1. Brush end bracket to the starter with nuts (2.2L).

Tighten

- Starter bracket nuts to 11 Nm (97 lbs. in.).

2. Shield to the starter (4.3L only).

Tighten

- Shield nuts to 12 Nm (106 lbs. in.).

3. Starter and shims (if equipped) to the vehicle.
4. Bracket to the engine mount bolt (2.2L only). Do not tighten.
5. Starter to the engine block bolts.

Tighten

- Bracket to engine bolt to 43 Nm (32 lbs. in.).
- Starter bolts to 43 Nm (32 lbs. in.).

6. Wires to the solenoid.
7. Flywheel cover.
8. Negative battery cable.
