Inspection Before Disassembly

Important: If possible, determine the cause the axle problem before you disassemble the axle.

1. Remove the cover.
2. Drain the oil.

Important: Use this information in the diagnosis of an axle problem. Information on ring gear backlash also helps in setting shim packs for locating and preloading the differential case.

3. Inspect the ring gear backlash. Refer to Backlash Adjustment.
4. Inspect the case for metal chips and shavings. Determine the source of the chips and shavings, such as a broken gear or a bearing cage.
