Accumulator Replacement

ACCUMULATOR REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging. Service and Repair
2. Remove the battery.

3. Remove the battery heat shield.

4. Remove the nut retaining the heater pipe bracket to the dash panel.
5. Reposition the heater pipe bracket to access the refrigerant lines.

6. Remove the compressor hose to accumulator retaining bolt.

IMPORTANT: Cap or tape the open compressor hose and the accumulator immediately to prevent contamination.

7. Disconnect the compressor hose from the accumulator, discard the O-ring.
8. Reposition the compressor hose end.

9. Remove the accumulator bracket mounting nuts.
10. Reposition the accumulator slightly to access the accumulator hose to accumulator fitting.

IMPORTANT: Prior to removal, take note of the accumulator alignment to the accumulator hose and the rear evaporator tube.

11. Using a back-up wrench on the accumulator fitting (2), loosen the accumulator hose fitting (1) from the accumulator.

IMPORTANT: Cap or tape the open accumulator hose and the accumulator immediately to prevent contamination.

12. Disconnect the accumulator hose from the accumulator, discard the O-ring.

13. Remove the accumulator from the vehicle.
14. Loosen the accumulator bracket bolt.
15. Remove the accumulator from the accumulator bracket.
16. Inspect the accumulator bracket insulator and the accumulator lower insulator for wear or damage.

17. If replacing the accumulator, drain and measure as much of the oil as possible from the removed accumulator.

This measurement will be used during installation of the replacement accumulator.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1. Replacement accumulator will come without refrigerant oil.
2. Add 60 ml (2 oz) more than amount drained from old accumulator.

3. Replace the accumulator bracket insulator, if necessary.
4. Replace the accumulator lower insulator, if necessary:
4.1. Remove the paper backing from the lower insulator (1).
4.2. Position and install the insulator (1) to the bottom of the accumulator (2) as shown.
5. Install the accumulator to the accumulator bracket.
6. Tighten the accumulator bracket bolt just enough to provide some resistance in rotating the accumulator.

7. Install the accumulator and bracket into position in the vehicle.
8. Remove the cap or tape from the accumulator hose and the accumulator.
9. Using a lint-free clean, dry cloth, carefully clean the sealing surfaces of the accumulator hose and the accumulator.
10. Lightly coat the new O-ring seal (1) with mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT allow any of the mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil on the O-ring to enter the refrigerant system.

11. Carefully slide the new O-ring seal (1) onto the accumulator hose until seated.

12. Install the accumulator hose to the accumulator.
13. Align the accumulator to the accumulator hose and the rear evaporator tube as noted prior to removal.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice

14. Using a back-up wrench on the accumulator fitting (2), secure the accumulator hose fitting (1) to the accumulator.

Tighten
Tighten the accumulator hose fitting to the accumulator to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).

15. Install the accumulator and bracket into position.
16. Install the accumulator bracket mounting nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the accumulator bracket mounting nuts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

17. Tighten the accumulator bracket bolt.

Tighten
Tighten the accumulator bracket bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

18. Remove the cap or tape from the compressor hose and the accumulator.
19. Using a lint-free clean, dry cloth, carefully clean the sealing surfaces of the compressor hose and the accumulator.
20. Lightly coat the O-ring seal (1) with mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT allow any of the mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil on the O-ring to enter the refrigerant system.

21. Carefully slide the new O-ring (1) onto the compressor hose until seated.

Leave a light coating of the refrigerant oil to remain on the compressor hose in the area indicated (2) ONLY.

22. Install the compressor hose to the accumulator.
23. Install the compressor hose to accumulator retaining bolt.

Tighten
Tighten the compressor hose to accumulator retaining bolt to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

24. Install the heater pipe bracket to the dash panel stud.
25. Install the heater pipe bracket retaining nut.

Tighten
Tighten the heater pipe bracket retaining nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

26. Install the battery heat shield.
27. Install the battery.
28. Program the transmitters. Refer to Transmitter Programming/Synchronization
29. Evacuate and charge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Service and Repair
30. Check the accumulator joints for leaks. Refer to Leak TestingLeak Testing
