30. Fluid Pump Assembly Overhaul
- Tools Required- J 34673 Flat Gage Bar
- J 9617 Pump Seal Installer
- J 36850 TRANSJEL(r) Transmission Assembly Lubricant
- J 8001 Dial Indicator Set
1. Remove two fluid pump cover seal rings (774) on the rear of the pump cover hub.
2. Remove the fluid pump cover seal (768) from the fluid pump body (767).
3. Remove 11 fluid pump cover bolts.
4. Remove the fluid pump cover (771) from the fluid pump body (767).
5. Remove the input shaft fluid seal (torque converter hub seal) (766).
6. Inspect the input shaft fluid seal (torque converter hub seal) (766) for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
7. Inspect the fluid pump cover seal rings for cuts, wear or other damage.
8. Inspect the fluid pump gear crescent (772) for unusual wear or damage.
9. Measure the pump body driven gear clearance. Move the pump driven gear (770) to one side of the pump body. Then use a feeler gage in order to measure the clearance between the pump body (767) and the driven gear (770). Standard clearance is 0.07-0.15 mm (0.0028-0.0059 inch). If clearance exceeds 0.30 mm (0.011 inch), replace the pump driven gear (770).
10. Measure the pump drive/driven gear tip clearance by placing a feeler gage between the gear teeth and the gear crescent. Standard tip clearance is 0.11-0.14 mm (0.0044-0.0055 inch). If clearance exceeds 0.30 mm (0.011 inch), replace the pump drive and driven gears.
11. Measure the pump drive gear/driven gear side clearance. Place a J 34673 across the pump body and use a feeler gage in order to measure the clearance between the pump body (767) and the drive/driven gears (769/770). Standard side clearance should measure 0.02-0.05 mm (0.0008-0.0019 inch). If clearance exceeds 0.1 mm (0.0039 inch), replace the pump drive/driven gears.
12. Install the pump drive/driven gears into the pump body (767). Lubricate with J 36850.
13. Inspect the pump drive/driven gears for smooth operation.
14. Install the pump cover (771) to the pump body (767) with eleven pump body bolts.
- Tighten the pump cover bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.)
15. Install two pump cover seal rings onto the pump cover hub. Lubricate the rings with J 36850.
16. Install a new pump cover seal to the pump body (767). Lubricate the seal with J 36850.
17. Install the input shaft fluid seal (torque converter hub seal) (776), using a J 9617.
18. Install a flat, outer input shaft bearing race (778) on the rear hub of the fluid pump cover (771). Lubricate the bearing race with J 36850, so that the bearing race will adhere to the rear of the fluid pump cover hub.
19. Install the direct clutch outer washer (775) on the fluid pump cover (771). Lubricate with J 36850 and fit the washer into the notch of the fluid pump cover. The notch is indicated in the illustration by the number 1.
20. Install the input shaft inner race (780), with the flange facing up, onto the input shaft (776). Install the input shaft bearing (779) onto the input shaft (776). Lubricate with J 36850.
21. Install the fluid pump to the transaxle case. Lubricate the input shaft, the pump cover seal rings and the pump cover seal with J 36850. Gently push down until you make contact with the case. Use caution not to drop the input shaft bearing outer race on the rear of the fluid pump cover hub.
22. Install the six fluid pump body bolts (765).
- Tighten the fluid pump body bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
23. Measure the input shaft end play by positioning the J 8001 on the end of the input shaft (776). Then grasp the input shaft and move the shaft up and down. The input shaft end play should measure 0.3-0.9 mm (0.012-0.035 inch). If the input shaft end play exceeds specification, remove the fluid pump and replace the outer input shaft bearing race on the fluid pump side.
