Starter Motor Replacement
REMOVAL PROCEDURECAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
3. Remove the 4 bolts from the front stabilizer shaft insulator bracket.
4. Lower the front stabilizer shaft.
5. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.
6. Remove the front exhaust pipe from the vehicle.
7. Remove the bolt (1) from the transmission fluid line bracket and position the bracket aside.
8. Disconnect the starter solenoid electrical connector.
9. Remove the retaining nut and positive battery cable from the starter solenoid.
10. Remove the 2 bolts (1) from the starting motor.
11. Move the starting motor towards the front of the vehicle into the engine mounting bracket until the pinion clears the transmission case.
12. Move the starting motor toward the back of the vehicle while swinging the pinion to the right side of the vehicle until the starting motor clears the engine mount bracket.
13. Rotate the starting motor 180 degrees so the pinion faces the front of the vehicle.
14. Remove the starting motor through the area between the exhaust pipe and the transmission.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the starter motor assembly with the pinion towards the front of the vehicle through the area between the exhaust pipe and the transmission.
2. Rotate the starting motor 180 degrees so the pinion faces the back of the vehicle.
3. Move the starting motor toward the front of the vehicle into the engine mount bracket until the pinion clears the transmission case.
4. Move the starting motor towards the back of the vehicle into the transmission case and align the mounting holes.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install the mounting bolts (1).
Tighten
Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to 11 N.m (22 lb ft).
6. Connect the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. Secure with the nut.
Tighten
Tighten the starter solenoid nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
7. Connect the starter solenoid electrical connector.
8. Install the bolt (1) to the transmission fluid line bracket.
9. Install the front exhaust pipe to the vehicle.
10. Install the propeller shaft to the vehicle.
11. Secure the front stabilizer shaft to the vehicle with the 4 bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the stabilizer shaft insulator bracket bolts to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Connect the negative battery cable.
Tighten
Tighten the negative battery cable-to-negative battery terminal retainer to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
