2002 Chevrolet and GMC S/T Utility Models (Trailblazer, Envoy)
2002 Oldsmobile Bravada
with 8.0 Inch Ring Gear Rear Axle

Important:

In order to provide customer feedback, an Exchange Program is being implemented for the 2002 8.0 Inch Ring Gear Rear Axle. This program is available until June 30, 2001 or until a predetermined number of axles are returned. This rear axle exchange will enable GM Engineers and the axle supplier to evaluate product variation and will promote the development of process improvements which will help minimize axle concerns for the future.

Important:
This Exchange Program is valid for leakage and rear axle noise conditions. Dealers in the US should contact the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at 1-877-446-8227. Canadian dealers should contact TAC at 1-800-263-7740 (Canada-English) or 1-800-263-7960 (Canada-French).

The following information explains all the requirements regarding diagnosis, serviceable and non-serviceable items, warranty claims processing procedures and shipping information. File this information in the Special Exchange Policy Procedures Manual.

In the event your dealership receives a concern on the 8.0 Rear Axle Assembly, follow the procedures listed below. Your cooperation in adhering to these procedures will greatly improve the program effectiveness.

Exchange Procedure

Before calling TAC, have all the necessary information available per the Diagnostic Worksheets in order to help further diagnose your customers concern.

Contact TAC with worksheets and details of the concern. If it is determined that an exchange rear axle assembly is necessary, the assembly will be shipped within 24 hours at no charge to the dealer. The replacement axle assembly will be shipped dry and must be filled to a level that is 0-10 mm (0-0.40 in) below the axle fill plug. Use only 1.6-1.8 L (1.7-1.9 qt) of synthetic axle fluid, P/N 12378261 (in Canada, use P/N 10953455).

When the exchange unit is received, the original unit must be returned to the GM Warranty Parts Center (WPC) immediately upon receipt of the WPC parts request. Failure to return the axle will result in the dealership being BILLED for the exchanged axle and associated costs.

Replacement rear axle assemblies must be returned complete as removed from the vehicle including the rotors, but without the rear brake calipers or the brake pads. Original brake calipers and pads are to be reinstalled onto the replacement axle. DO NOT DISASSEMBLE ANY INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE AXLE BEFORE RETURNING. DEALERSHIPS RETURNING UNITS EVEN PARTIALLY DISASSEMBLED WILL BE SUBJECT TO BEING BILLED FOR THE EXCHANGED AXLE AND ASSOCIATED COSTS.

Return Axle Shipping Preparation

1. Drain the axle fluid by removing the drain plug. Do not remove the rear cover.

2. Transfer all of the plastic shipping plugs and covers.

3. In order to minimize the dealerships' workload, the removed axle must be returned per the normal WPC procedures outlined in Corporate Bulletin Number 99-00-89-019A, dated December, 2000 (Dealers in Canada should refer to Home Office Letter 99-201). Please reference this bulletin for shipping instructions. In order to increase the effectiveness of this program, submit the warranty claim immediately for payment in order for the WPC to start the necessary return request.

4. Pack the axle assembly into the original shipping container and return to the WPC per Corporate Bulletin Number 99-00-89-019A (Dealers in Canada should reference Home Office Letter 99-201).
