Bumper: Description and Operation

Bumper and Fascia Description

General Motors passenger vehicle bumpers are designed in order to withstand a collision into a fixed barrier at 8 km\h (5 mph). After absorbing the energy of the collision, the energy absorbers rebound to 80 to 90 percent their original position. The energy absorbing capability of the front and rear bumper systems is achieved through a honey comb or foam type energy absorbing structure. The structure is in each bumper.

The front and rear bumper fascias are made of urethane, which will withstand minor impact and return to the original shape.

For bumper and bumper fascia repair or refinishing, refer to General Plastic Repair Instructions in Plastic Panel Information and Repair.

Be careful near theft deterrent labels. For more information on theft deterrent labels, refer to Labeling - Anti-Theft.

If the bumper does not return to the original form after a collision, the following components may need replacement:

* The bumper fascia
* The energy absorber
* The impact bar
