Rear Engine Plate: Service and Repair

Engine Flywheel Housing Replacement

^ Tools Required
- J 37228 Seal Cutter

Removal Procedure





1. Drain the cooling system.
2. Remove the starter.
3. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.
4. Remove the turbocharger oil return pipe nuts from the top of the flywheel housing.





5. Remove the oil filter.

Important: The flywheel housing has dowels that protrude into the upper oil pan and engine block. The upper oil pan requires removal for proper installation of the flywheel housing.

6. Remove the upper oil pan.





7. Remove the engine rear cover bolts, denoted by the black circles.





8. Remove the oil cooler adapter to the engine flywheel housing nuts.
9. Remove the oil cooler adapter to oil cooler bolts.
10. Remove and discard the oil cooler adapter gaskets (1, 2).
11. Separate the flywheel housing from the cylinder block using J 37228.
12. Remove the engine rear cover.
13. If required, clean and inspect the flywheel housing.

Installation Procedure





1. Install NEW O-ring seals to the flywheel housing, if required.





2. Apply a 2 mm (1/8 inch) wide bead of sealant (3) GM P/N 97720043 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to the engine rear cover sealing surfaces.





3. Install a NEW oil cooler adapter gasket (2).
4. Install a NEW oil cooler adapter to flywheel housing gasket (1).
5. Install the oil cooler adapter to the flywheel housing.
6. Loosely install the oil cooler adapter to the flywheel housing nuts.
7. Install the flywheel housing to the block.






8. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Install the flywheel housing bolts, denoted by the black circles.
^ Tighten the bolts to 90 Nm (67 ft. lbs.).





9. Install the oil cooler adapter to oil cooler bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts/nuts to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).





10. Install a new gasket to the turbocharger oil return pipe.
11. Install the turbocharger oil return pipe to flywheel housing nuts.
^ Tighten the nuts to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the upper oil pan.
13. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal.





14. Install the starter.
15. Install a new oil filter.
^ Tighten the oil filter after contact 1 to 1� turns.
16. Lower the vehicle.
17. Fill the cooling system.
