Fuel Filter: Service and Repair



FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

NOTE: Refer to Cover and Plug Openings Notice in Service Precautions.

IMPORTANT:
- Always maintain cleanliness when servicing fuel system components.
- There is no service interval for in-line fuel filter replacement. Only replace the in-line fuel filter if the filter is restricted.




1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting at the inlet of the in-line fuel filter..
4. Use a back-up wrench in order to prevent the in-line fuel filter from turning. Remove the threaded fitting nut from the outlet of the fuel filter.
5. Drain any remaining fuel into an approved gasoline container.




6. Remove the fuel filter mounting bracket bolt.
7. Remove the fuel filter and the bracket.
8. Remove the fuel filter from the fuel filter mounting bracket.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTE: Refer to Fuel System Ground Notice in Service Precautions.




1. Remove the protective caps from the new in-line fuel filter.
2. Slide the fuel filter into the fuel filter mounting bracket.
3. Install the fuel filter and mounting bracket.
4. Install the fuel filter mounting bracket bolt.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Tighten the bolt to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).




5. Connect the quick-connect fitting to the inlet of the fuel filter.
6. Install the threaded fitting nut to the outlet of the fuel filter.

Use a back-up wrench in order to prevent the in-line fuel filter from turning. Tighten the fuel filter outlet threaded fitting nut to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Tighten the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
9. Connect the negative battery cable.
10. Inspect for leaks.
1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
3. Turn ON the ignition.
4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
11. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
