Transmission Output Shaft Seal Replacement
Special Tools
* J 45000 - Seal Remover
* J 45012 - Holding Fixture
* J 37212 - Front Output Shaft Seal Installer
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. Remove the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement (V6) Service and RepairExhaust System Replacement (V8) Service and Repair.
3. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60) Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60).
4. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
5. Remove the transmission mount assembly. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement Service and Repair.
6. Install the J 45012 - Holding Fixture to the output shaft flange.
Caution:
Do not reuse the flange nut. Reusing the flange nut may cause damage to the transmission.
7. Remove and discard the output shaft flange nut.
Note: Do not damage the output shaft flange, the output shaft or the case extension housing.
Note: To remove the output shaft flange pull the output shaft flange away from the transmission.
8. Remove the output shaft flange from the output shaft.
Note: Do not scrape or gouge the case extension housing while removing the output shaft seal.
9. Use the J 45000 - Seal Remover to remove the output shaft seal from the case extension housing.
Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the NEW output shaft seal with clean transmission fluid.
2. Install the NEW output shaft seal to the case extension housing using the J 37212 - Front Output Shaft Seal Installer.
Note: Make sure that the output flange is free from all foreign material.
3. Install the output shaft flange to the output shaft.
Caution:
Stake the flange nut onto the output shaft. Use the two staking grooves on the shaft to locate the staking points. Failure to stake the flange nut may result in damage to the transmission.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
4. Install the NEW output shaft flange nut and tighten to 105 Nm (77 lb ft).
5. Remove the J 45012 - Holding Fixture from the output shaft flange.
6. Install the transmission mount assembly. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement Service and Repair.
7. Remove the transmission jack.
8. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60) Propeller Shaft Replacement (Except 4L60).
9. Install the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement (V6) Service and RepairExhaust System Replacement (V8) Service and Repair.
10. Lower the vehicle.
