Forward Clutch

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove snap ring (619) and direct clutch driving hub from forward clutch
housing.

2. Remove forward clutch hub and thrust washers.

3. Remove clutch plates, then the waved or dished plate.

4. Remove apply ring, if equipped.

5. Using tools J-4670-01 and J-21364, or equivalents, remove snap ring and release spring assembly.

6. Remove piston release spring and piston.

7. Remove turbine shaft as follows. Unless forward clutch housing and/or turbine shaft is damaged, disassembly is not necessary.

a. Place housing in mechanical press with turbine shaft down.

b. Remove turbine shaft by placing 3/8 inch drive extension on end of shaft and pressing out.

INSPECTION
1. Inspect clutch plates for burning, scoring, flaking, pitting or wear.

2. Inspect release springs for collapsed coils or distortion.

3. Inspect clutch hubs for spline wear, open lubrication holes and damaged thrust faces.

4. Inspect piston for cracks.

5. Inspect forward clutch housing for wear, scoring, cracks and open oil
passages.

6. Check for free operation of check balls.

7. Inspect turbine shaft for spline damage, open oil passages, cracks or distortion.


ASSEMBLY
1. Install forward clutch housing in press facing up.

2. Install turbine shaft in clutch housing approximately 1/8 inch.

3. Continue installing in small steps, checking often to ensure connection is straight.

4. Lubricate new inner and outer seals with transmission fluid and the seal grooves with petroleum jelly.

5. Install seals on piston with lips facing away from spring pocket.

6. Lubricate center piston seal and groove.

7. Install center piston seal onto clutch housing with lip facing up.

8. Install tool J-21409 or equivalent over clutch hub.

9. Place piston inside tool J-21362 or equivalent and insert assembly into housing, rotating slightly clockwise until seated.

10. Install clutch release springs in piston.

11. Using tool J-21664 or equivalent, install retainer on springs.

12. Install snap ring.

13. Install thrust washer on outside of forward clutch hub.

14. Install bronze thrust washer on inside of hub and retain with petroleum jelly.

15. Install forward clutch hub in forward clutch housing.






16. Install apply ring, if used, into housing.

17. Install waved or dished clutch plate.







18. Install steel and composition clutch plates alternately as shown in Figure.

18. Install direct clutch hub in forward clutch housing, over clutch plates.

19. Install snap ring.







20. Place forward clutch on oil pump assembly and air check forward clutch.
