Subject:
TAPE DECK NOISE/STATIC DURING PROGRAM PAUSES
Model and Year:
1988-93 C/K TRUCKS WITH RPO UM6/UX1 RADIO AND REMOTE CASSETTE PLAYER
CONDITION:
Noise/static heard through the audio system during program pauses when using the cassette player.
CAUSE:
Electromagnetic interference emitted from the cross vehicle wiring harness and received by the magnetically sensitive pick-up heads in the cassette player.
CORRECTION:
The cross vehicle wiring harness is several inches longer than necessary to accommodate servicing requirements. In some instances, the slack allows the harness to bunch up inside the cross vehicle conduit/guide coming very close to the bottom of the tape player directly above the harness (Figure 1).
This condition can be corrected by removing the glove box liner for access and pulling the harness taut or otherwise as far away from the tape player as possible.
This may not eliminate the noise 100 percent in every case, but it should (in every case) reduce the noise level significantly.
