Assembly

1. Lubricate inner and outer clutch piston seals and grooves with transmission fluid.

2. Install inner and outer seals with lips facing away from spring pockets.

3. Install center seal.

4. Install tool J-21362 or equivalent on housing hub.

5. Place piston inside tool J-21409 or equivalent.

6. Install tool J-21409 and piston into housing.

7. Install clutch release springs in pockets.

8. Using adaptor tool J-25018-A and bridge tool No. J-23327-1 or equivalent, install spring retainer.

9. Install snap ring and piston.

10. Install waved clutch plate or dished




11. Install steel and composition clutch plates alternately, Fig. 19 through 21.

12. Install direct clutch backing plate and snap ring.

13. Install roller assembly or sprag assembly.

14. Install intermediate clutch race with clockwise motion. When properly installed, it should not turn counterclockwise.

15. Install intermediate clutch retainer and snap ring.






16. Place direct clutch assembly on center support and air check direct clutch. Air applied to reverse passage will escape from direct passage. This condition is normal. Apply air to direct passage to actuate piston and move clutch plates.
