TAILGATE LATCH RELEASES OVER ROUGH ROADS
Model and Year:
1992-93 C/K TRUCKS
Some owners may comment that the tailgate latch on their 1992-1993 C/K pickups will release while driving over rough roads. This condition may be caused by the inability of the tailgate latch to attach onto the striker properly.
To correct this condition, adjust the latch alignment tab (Figure 1) on the side that tends to release over rough roads so that it is square to the latch assembly. Adjusting the latch alignment tab will provide a more secure attachment to the striker. If squaring the tab does not eliminate the fore and aft movement of the tailgate when the tailgate is in a closed position, install an additional rubber insulator to the latch assembly (Figure 1). If tailgate movement still exists, shim the striker away from the pickup box.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Adjust the latch alignment tab so that it is square with the latch assembly (Figure 1).
2. Close the tailgate and try to move it back and forth at the upper right-hand and left-hand corners to insure that the rubber bumper is contacting the striker.
3. If movement of the tailgate still occurs, install an additional rubber insulator (P/N 15531055) to the latch housing (Figure 1).
4. If tailgate movement still occurs, shim the striker away from the pickup box.
