Leading/Trailing Brakes: Pushing Release Lever Off Its Stop:
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Mark relationship of brake drum to axle for installation reference, then remove the drum. If drum is difficult to remove, proceed as follows:
a. Ensure parking brake is fully released, then back off parking brake cable adjustment.
b. Remove plug from access hole in backing plate, then push parking brake lever off its stop using a suitable screwdriver.
3. Lift actuator lever arm up until upper end clears slot in adjuster screw, then slide actuator off pin and disconnect actuator spring from shoe.
4. Remove hold-down springs and pins.

5. Separate lower ends of shoes, then lift lower return spring over anchor plate. Allow ends of shoes to come together, then remove lower return spring.
6. Remove shoe and lining assemblies together with upper return spring and adjusting screw assembly.
NOTICE: If necessary, overlap lower ends of shoes so upper shoe ends clear wheel cylinder boots, then spread bottom of assembly to clear axle flange.
7. Remove upper return spring and adjusting screw assembly from brake shoes.
8. Remove retaining ring, pin, spring washer and parking brake lever.
9. Remove parking brake lever from shoe.
