Condition

Some customers may comment that the rear quarter body side windows may pop out when the door is closed or that the latch seems quite flexible.

Cause

This condition was caused by the improper application of urethane by the assembly plants that resulted in inadequate support behind the latch.

Correction

To correct this condition, apply a bead of urethane along the back of the window frame at the edge of the sheet metal, or install rivets as indicated below. This will provide the needed support for the latch to make it more rigid.

Service Procedure I

1. Apply a generous bead of urethane in the crevice between the rear edge of the frame and the body side outer panel. While applying the bead, spring the rear edge of the frame outward. This is done by applying hand pressure to the latch with the window in a locked open position. Force as much urethane under the frame as possible (Figure 1).

2. Clean up any excess urethane with a rag dipped in Dupont 3919 Prep-Sol or equivalent.

3. Allow the urethane to completely cure before latching the window. Latching the window premature~ may spring the frame away from the previously applied urethane. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding urethane cure time and temperature.

4. If this procedure does not provide the needed rigidity, then proceed to Service Procedure II.

Service Procedure II

1. Separate the frame from the glass at the latch.

2. Remove the two screws that secure the glass in position. Remove the glass.

3. Drill two 5/32" holes through the plastic window frame and the pinch weld flange. These two holes should be 25 mm apart at the centerline of the latch assembly.

4. Fill the drilled holes with black RTV P/N 12345739.

5. Install and upset two rivets P/N 15646304. Apply an additional dab of RTV over the head of each rivet.

6. Reinstall the quarter window glass.

Important:
This procedure is most effective when the window frame is originally installed fairy tight to the sheet metal pinch weld flange. If the installation of rivets creates an objectionable buckle in the window frame, then the entire frame should be replaced.
