Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Modes of Operation

MODES OF OPERATION
The PCM monitors voltages from several sensors to determine much fuel to give the engine. The fuel is delivered under one of several conditions called modes. All the modes are controlled by the PCM.

STARTING MODE
When the key is first turned ON the PCM turns ON the glow plug control system. The PCM checks the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor and the Barometric Pressure (BARO) sensor then determines the proper fuel for starting. The PCM controls the amount of fuel delivered in the starting mode by changing how long the injection solenoid is turned "ON."

FUEL CUTOFF MODE
Fuel cutoff occurs at high engine RPM or high vehicle speed to protect internal engine components from damage.
