Transmission Assembly Removal and Replacement

TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT
1. Remove shift control lever.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Drain transmission oil.
4. Remove propeller shaft.
5. Remove transfer case, if used.
6. Remove parking brake and controls, if used.
7. Remove exhaust pipes, if necessary.
8. Remove electrical harnesses, as necessary.
9. Remove clutch slave cylinder and lay it aside.
10. Remove bolts and the inspection cover (RPO MG5).

Important
- Note the positions of any lines or wires before removing them.
- Support the transmission with a jack.

11. Remove cross member.











12. Remove bolts (19), and washers (21), as used.
13. Remove transmission (20).

Important
- Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch.
- Pull the transmission straight back on the clutch hub splines.

Installation

Note: Shift the transmission into "Neutral" before installing.

1. Install transmission (20).

Important
- Do not force the transmission into the clutch.
- Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch, leave the jack under the transmission to support it.

NOTICE: When fasteners are removed, always reinstall them at the same location from which they were removed. If a fastener needs to be replaced use the correct part number fastener for that application. If the correct part number fastener is not available, a fastener of equal strength (or stronger) may be used. Fasteners that are not reused, and those requiring thread locking compound will be called out. The correct torque value must be used when installing fasteners that require it. If these conditions are not followed, parts or system damage could result.

2. Install washers (21) and bolts (19), as used.
3. Tighten bolts (19).
Refer to Specifications.
4. Install the crossmember.
- Remove the jack.
5. Install bolts and the inspection cover (RPO MG5).
Tighten inspection cover bolts to 18 N.m (13 ft. lb.).
6. Install clutch slave cylinder.
7. Install electrical harnesses, as necessary.
8. Install exhaust pipes, if necessary.
9. Install parking brake and controls, if used.
10. Install transfer case, if used.
11. Install propeller shaft.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Install shift control lever, as used.
14. Install new transmission oil.
