Disassemble

1. Remove torque converter assembly from transmission.

2. Remove both speed sensor assemblies.

3. Install holding fixture tool No. J-8763- 02 and adapter tool No. J-38655 or equivalents to transmission, then connect transmission and holding fixture into base assembly No. J-3289-20 or equivalent.

4. Rotate transmission to a vertical position and lock in place with base pin.

5. Remove oil pan bolts, oil pan, oil pan gasket, magnet and filter, per figure.

6. Rotate transmission until bottom pan surface is up and lock in place.

7. Disconnect connector wire harness assembly from case and six connectors.

8. Remove six bolts and pressure switch manifold assembly, per figure. Ensure five O-rings are attached to pressure switch manifold assembly.

9. Remove 21 bolts from valve body assembly, manual detent spring and roller assembly.

10. Remove three wiring clips, fluid level indicator stop, lube pipe, lube pipe retainer and clamp.

11. Remove control valve assembly including accumulator housing assembly, valve body gaskets, spacer plate and accumulator gasket.

12. Disconnect manual valve from control valve assembly to prevent any damage.

13. Remove check balls from case passages. Do not use a magnet. It could cause check ball to become magnetized causing metal particles to stick to ball.

14. Remove pulse width modulated (PWM) solenoid screen.

15. Remove front servo piston assembly, per figure.

16. Remove rear servo cover and gasket, then rear servo/accumulator assembly, per figure.

17. Check for proper band apply pin as follows:

a. Place gauge pin tool No. J-21370- 10 or equivalent into servo bore, per figure.

b. Position band apply pin checking tool No. J-38737 or equivalent over the bore with hex nut facing parking pawl linkage, per figure.

c. Fasten tool to transmission using two servo cover bolts and torque to 18ft. lbs.

d. Ensure gauge pin moves freely in tool and pin bore.

e. Apply 25 ft. lbs. of torque to the nut on gauge.

f. Select correct pin, per figure.

18. Remove six bolts, extension housing assembly and O-ring, per figure.

19. Remove nut, pin, detent lever and actuator assembly, per figure.

20. Remove parking pawl bracket and spring.

21. Remove parking pawl shaft hole plug with a screw extractor.

22. Remove parking pawl shaft retainer, shaft and pawl.

23. Remove seal and manual shaft.

24. Check front end play as follows:

a. Install dial indicator tool No. J-8001 or equivalent to transmission, per figure.

b. Eliminate slack by pressing down on turbine shaft and with pry bar tool No. J-28585 or equivalent press up on output carrier, then pull up with 3-5 lbs. of force on turbine shaft to eliminate any clearance between snap ring and overdrive carrier.

c. Index dial indicator against end of turbine shaft and set dial to zero.

d. Pull out turbine shaft while holding output carrier up, then increase lifting force to approximately 20 ft. lbs. and read endplay. Proper endplay is .O04-.022 inch.

e. If endplay is not as specified refer to thrust washer chart, per figure, for correct thrust washer sizes.

25. Check rear endplay as follows:

a. Install dial indicator tool No. J-8O01 or equivalent to transmission, per figure.

b. Push in on output shaft to take up any slack.

c. Place dial indicator against output shaft and set dial to zero.

d. Move output shaft in and out noting amount of endplay. Proper endplay is .005 - .O25 inch.

e. If endplay is not as specified refer to thrust washer chart, per figure, for correct thrust washer sizes.

26. Remove turbine shaft O-ring, per figure.

27. Remove seven pump mounting bolts and attach puller tool No. J-37789 or equivalent, then remove pump assembly from transmission.

28. Remove pump gasket and selective thrust washer, per figure.

29. Remove overdrive unit assembly and turbine shaft, per figure.

30. Recheck fourth clutch bolt torque. Torque should be 133 in. lbs.
minimum.

31. Remove fourth clutch bolt using a 4OT Torx head socket. Do not reuse bolt. Damage could result to fourth clutch housing.

32. Remove fourth clutch housing assembly, per figure.

33. Remove bearing assembly from top of forward clutch housing, per figure.

34. Remove forward clutch assembly using tool No. J-38358-A or equivalent.

35. Remove thrust washer. Washer may be stuck to bottom of forward clutch housing or top of direct clutch housing.

36. Remove direct clutch housing assembly using tool J-38733 or equivalent, per figure, then remove front band.

37. Remove snap ring, intermediate clutch backing plate and clutch plates, per figure.

38. Remove center support bolt, per figure. Do not reuse bolt.

39. Remove tapered snap ring, per figure.

40. Attach removing tool No. J-38868 and slide hammer tool No. J-6125-B or equivalents to main shaft, then remove center support assembly.

41. Remove spacer located at bottom of case splines, per figure.

42. Remove rear band, thrust washer and selective thrust washers. Thrust washers may be stuck to output shaft and gear unit or bottom of case.
