Condition

Some owners may comment on any of the following conditions:

^ The front doors are difficult to open.

^ The doors may not stay open.

^ The doors are noisy and/or binding when opened.

Cause

A worn or improperly operating door hinge detent link may cause this condition.

Correction

A new door detent link kit, which includes a new rivet, washer, and nut, has been developed to correct this condition. Install a new detent link kit on affected vehicles. Use the following procedure and the part numbers listed below.

Tools Required

J 36604 Door Hinge Spring Compressor

1. Remove the door spring using the J 36604, or equivalent.

2. Using a punch (1), mark a spot for drilling at the top center of the old rivet (4).

Notice:
In the following step, do not drill into the hinge strap or unnecessary, additional repairs may result.

3. Drill a 1/8 inch pilot hole using an angle head drill. The drill should penetrate the old rivet (4) at least as deep as the top of the old detent link (3).

4. Drill a 17/64 inch hole to the same depth as in Step 3. The 17/64 inch drill bit is smaller than the rivet diameter so that the hole in the hinge strap (1) is not damaged during drilling.

5. Using a chisel, place the tool between the head of the old rivet and the bottom of the detent link. This will prevent damage to the hinge strap. Pry the old rivet out using a suitable pry bar (4).

6. If the old rivet separates, and the top portion remains in the hinge strap, use a 7/32 inch punch (4) in order to remove the top portion of the old rivet.

6.1. Punch from the bottom upward.

6.2. Discard the old rivet and the detent link (3).

7. Clean and apply primer to the new rivet, the nut and the new detent link.

8. Paint the new rivet, the nut and the new detent link to match the exterior vehicle color.

9. After the paint has dried, lubricate the surface of the new rivet (1) with grease, GM P/N 1050109 (In Canada use P/N 5264008), or equivalent The film thickness should be between 0.03-0.30 mm (0.001-0.012 in).

10. Finger tighten the new detent link (4) with the new washer (2), the rivet (3) and the new nut (1) to the hinge strap

Important:
In the next step, use tape or a suitable covering material in order to protect the door from damage when installing the stud.

11. Lift the stud in order to engage the knurls into the hinge strap. Tap the stud with a hammer until the knurls are halfway installed.

12. Tighten the nut until the shoulder bottoms out.

Tighten

Tighten the nut to 12-14 N.m (106-124 lb in).

13. Install the door detent spring. Use the J 36604, or equivalent. Refer to the Doors subsection in the appropriate Service Manual for the door spring installation procedures.

14. Open and close the door several times in order to test for noise, high effort and free movement of the detent link.
