DTC P0711, P0712, or P0713

Circuit/System Description

The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor is located inside of the transmission control module (TCM) assembly which has no serviceable parts. The TFT sensor provides transmission fluid temperature to the TCM. This fault is handled inside the TCM and no external circuits are involved.

Conditions for Running the DTC

P0711
* DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0116, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0336, P0337, P0338, P0711, P0716, P0722, P0723, P0742, or P2726 are not set.
* Ignition voltage is 8.6 volts or greater.
* The engine coolant temperature (ECT) is valid.
* The TCM internal temperature is -50°C to +170°C (-56°F and +336°F) at start up.
* The engine speed is 500 RPM or greater for 5 seconds.
* The vehicle speed is 8 km/h (5 mph) or greater for 5 minutes.
* The engine coolant temperature is between -39°C and 149°C (-38°F and 300°F).
* The accelerator pedal position signal is valid.
* The engine torque signal is valid.

P0712 or P0713
* DTCs P0712, P0713, P0716, P0717, P0722, or P0723 are not set.
* Ignition voltage is 8.6 volts or greater.
* The engine speed is 500 RPM or greater for 5 seconds.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0711 Condition 1
* Vehicle speed is 8 km/h (5 mph) or greater for 5 minutes.
* TCC slip speed is 150 RPM or greater.
* The TFT is between -50°C and +21°C (-58°F and +70°F) at start up.
* The TFT has changed by less than 2.0°C (3.6°F) in 2 minutes.
* The ECT is 70°C (158°F) or greater.
* The ECT has increased by 55°C (99°F) since start-up.

Condition 2
* Vehicle speed is 8 km/h (5 mph) or greater for 5 minutes.
* TCC slip speed is 120 RPM or greater for 5 minutes.
* The TFT is between 129-170°C (264-507°F).
* The TFT has changed by less than 2.0°C (3.6°F) in 2 minutes.
* The ECT is 70°C (158°F) or greater.
* The ECT has increased by 55°C (99°F) since start-up.

Condition 3

The TFT changes by 20°C (36°F) or greater 5 times over 7 seconds.

Condition 4

The TFT has not changed more than 20°C (36°F) during the following conditions:

* The TFT temperature at start up is -50°C (-58°F) for 42 minutes.
* The TFT temperature at start up is -25°C (-13°F) for 17 minutes.
* The TFT temperature at start up is -10°C (14°F) for 14 minutes.
* The TFT temperature at start up is -5°C (23°F) for 9 minutes.
* The TFT temperature at start up is 20°C (68°F) for 4 minutes.

P0712

The TFT is -74°C (-101°F) or less for 13 seconds or more.

P0713

The TFT is 174°C (345°F) or greater for 10 seconds or more.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* DTCs P0711, P0712, and P0713 are Type C DTCs.
* The TCM freezes transmission adaptive functions.
* The TCM allows the vehicle to operate in transmission protection mode.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P0711, P0712, and P0713 are Type C DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

During a road test, the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) should steadily increase to a normal operating temperature, and then stabilize.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Engine idling at normal operating temperature, verify the scan tool Trans Fluid Temp. parameter is between -74 and +174°C (-101 and +345°F).

If not within the specified range, replace the Q8 control solenoid valve assembly.

2. Operate the vehicle at 64 km/h (40 mph) for 10 minutes. Monitor the Transmission Fluid Temperature parameter and the TCM Temperature parameter with a scan tool. The Transmission Fluid Temperature parameter should increase by more than 2°C (3.5°F). Also, the Transmission Fluid Temperature parameter and the TCM Temperature parameter should be within 10°C (18°F) of each other.

If the Transmission Fluid Temperature parameter does not increase by more than 2°C (3.5°F) or the Transmission Fluid Temperature parameter is not within 10°C (18°F) of the TCM Temperature parameter, then replace the Q8 control solenoid valve assembly.

3. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.

* Control solenoid valve assembly replacement. Refer to Control Module References (Programming and Relearning) for replacement, setup, and programming.
* Perform the Service Fast Learn Adapts (Programming and Relearning) following all transmission related repairs.
