Front Differential Case Disassemble (9.25 Inch HD Axle)

Special Tools
* J 22888-20A - Gear Puller
* J 36597 - Bearing Cup Installer





Note: The ring gear bolts have left-hand threads.

1. Remove and discard the 12 ring gear bolts (1). Replace with NEW only.





Caution: Do not pry the ring gear from the differential case. Prying the ring gear from the differential case may cause damage to the ring gear and/or the differential case.

2. Using a hammer (1) and a brass drift (2), remove the ring gear (3) from the differential case.




3. Remove the differential pinion gear shaft lock bolt (2) and the differential pinion gear shaft (1) from the differential case.





Note: If the differential pinion gears and washer are to be re-used, mark the relationship of the differential pinion gears to the differential case.

4. Remove the differential pinion gears (2) and the washers (1) by rolling the differential side gears (3).





Note: If re-using the differential side gears and washers, mark the left and right side

5. Remove the differential side gears (2, 3) and the washers (1, 4) from the differential case.




6. Position the J 36597 - installer (1) in the bottom of the differential side gear bore.




7. There are 2 slots in the differential side gear bores that will be used to remove the differential adjuster/bearing cup from the differential side case.





Note: Before using the J 22888-20A, reverse the fingers so the hooks on the end of the fingers are faces outward instead of inward.

8. Install the fingers of the J 22888-20A - puller (1) in the slot shown in step 7.
9. Using the J 22888-20A - puller (1), remove the differential adjuster/bearing cup from the differential case.
