Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Fig. 17 Piston & Rod assembly:

Fig. 18 Piston ring installation:

During installation of piston and rod assembly, arrow at top of piston must face toward front of engine (timing chain), Fig. 17. Refer to Fig. 18 for correct piston ring installation and note following groove clearances:

1. No. 1 upper: 0.0024 - 0.0039 in. (0.06 - 0.10 mm). Wear limit: 0.004 in. (0.1 mm).
2. No. 2 intermediate: 0.0008 - 0.0024 in. (0.02 - 0.06 mm). Wear limit: 0.004 in. (0.1 mm).
3. Oil ring upper: 0.010 - 0.018 in. (0.25 - 0.45 mm). Wear limit: 0.039 in. (0.1 mm).
4. Oil ring intermediate: 0.010 - 0.018 in. (0.25 - 0.45 mm). Wear limit: 0.039 in. (0.1 mm).
5. Oil ring side rail: 0.008 - 0.035 in. (0.2 - 0.4 mm). Wear limit: 0.059 in. (0.15 mm). Connecting rod side clearance should be 0.004 - 0.010 inch.

Fig. 19 Installing oil ring side rail:

INSTALLING PISTON RING SIDE RAIL
1. Place one end of side rail between piston ring groove and spacer expander, Fig. 19.
2. Hold end of ring firmly and press downward on portion to be installed until side rail is in position. Do not use a piston ring expander.
3. Install upper side rail first, then the lower side rail.

Fig. 20 Piston ring end gap location:

PISTON RING END GAP LOCATION
1. Position piston ring end gaps as shown in Fig. 20.
2. Position oil ring expander gap at least 45° from side rail gaps but not on piston pin center line or in thrust direction.
