SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Vehicle may experience a sag when making a hard left hand turn. This condition occurs at low fuel levels (1/4 tank or less) and is due to the in-tank filter being momentarily exposed to air.

This repair should only be performed on vehicles with build dates on or after the following 1984 MDH's, and before the following 1985 MDH's.

Identify the assembly plant where suspect vehicle was built by the eleventh character of the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

DIAGNOSIS

Attach Miller Special Tool Fuel Pressure Gauge C-3292 and Adapter Hoses C-4799 to vehicle and road test. If vehicle sags when making a hard left turn and at the same time fuel pressure drops, proceed to repair procedure.

1984 EFI VEHICLES ONLY

On EFI vehicles, this condition is likely due to a misaligned in-tank filter. Check for proper alignment as follows:

1. Lower fuel tank by loosening straps (tank need not be removed.)

2. Spin off the lock ring on the fuel tank pump unit and remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank, being careful not to damage the filter.

FIGURE 1:

3. Visually check the filter to assure that it is properly oriented to the fuel pump unit. Turn the pump over and sight through the notch in the bottom of the flange (Figure 1). A correctly positioned filter will be directly in line with the two center rivets and the notch in the flange.
4. If filter is found to be out of location, realign to the proper position (see above) and no further service is required on EFI vehicles. Reinstall fuel pump assembly in the tank, again being careful not to damage the filter and secure lock ring, and reinstall fuel tank on vehicle.

5. If the filter was found to be in the proper location when checked in Step 3, proceed to replace the tank per the following turbo procedure.
