NOTE: THIS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN APPLIES ONLY TO 1987 AND 1988 DOMESTIC FRONT-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES, EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLES WITH SERIAL NUMBERS OF 9347-XXXX TO 9621-XXXX.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION

When vehicle is placed in DRIVE from any other gear position, the engagement is noticeably harsh. This condition can be aggravated by idle speeds higher than specified on the emissions label for warm curb idle.

DIAGNOSIS

^ Park vehicle on a level surface. Set parking brake.

^ Verify correct engine idle speed per vehicle emissions label.

^ Check transaxle oil level using appropriate service manual procedure.

^ Check for proper engine mount isolator adjustment using appropriate service manual procedure.

^ Apply service brakes, shift vehicle into drive at curb idle speeds several times. Allow 30 seconds of idle in neutral between engagements.

If unusually harsh or abrupt shift engagements are evident, the following repair procedure must be followed.

PARTS REQUIRED

Rear Clutch Disk - 3 or 4 Depending on Transaxle Application
(Brown Friction Material Only) PN 5224084
REPAIR PROCEDURE

The above condition is caused by rear clutch discs (green or olive, drab in color) which are not to specifications. These clutch discs must be replaced to correct the condition.

This procedure outlines the replacement of the rear clutch discs.

1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Drain and remove transaxle.

2. Using appropriate service manual, disassemble transaxle to access rear clutch.

3. Remove rear clutch pack and replace with new pack, PN 5224084, (brown friction material ONLY). Reset rear clutch clearance to 0.67 - 1.10 mm (0.026 - 0.043 in.).

4. Using appropriate service manual, reassemble transaxle.

5. Install transaxle in vehicle. Lower vehicle and check engine/transaxle alignment.

6. Refill transaxle to the correct level with Mopar type 7176 Automatic Transmission Fluid, PN 4318007.

7. Cheek vehicle for smooth engagements into drive. Road test vehicle to verify proper transaxle operation.
