This bulletin supersedes Technical Service Bulletin 18-09-87 (Dated 3/30/87) which should be removed from your files. A more specific diagnostic procedure has been provided to identify the problem.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Vehicle may exhibit an erratic idle when the AC compressor is engaged (AC or defrost button depressed). Idle may fluctuate 100-400 rpm with the engine at full operating temperature idling in drive.

This condition only occurs on vehicles equipped with the following logic module part numbers:

Model Year/ Logic Module Logic Module
Trans/Emission Prod. PN Service PN

1986 Auto Fed. 5227505 5227507, 5227893
1986 Auto Calif. 5227508 5227510
1987 Auto Fed. 5227579 5227880
1987 Auto Calif. 5227581 5227882

DIAGNOSIS

^ With engine at full operating temperature, depress AC button (be sure AC compressor is engaged), turn on headlights, and place gear selector in drive.

^ Toggle high beam headlights on and off, using the visual horn/passing light function on the turn signal lever.
^ Monitor idle quality and observe for unstable idle (100-400 rpm change).

^ If fluctuating idle rpm is observed when AC button is depressed, or when the headlights are toggled, full field the alternator by turning blower motor on high, heated rear window defroster on, etc.

^ If the idle becomes and remains stable, the logic module is one from the above list and the following repair procedure must be performed.

If depressing the AC button or toggling of the headlights has no affect on idle, refer to the Driveability Test Procedure for repair.
