SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Poor engine performance or no start during cold weather operation due to timing belt tooth skipping.

DIAGNOSIS

Timing belt tooth skipping on the subject vehicles may be caused by snow and/or ice being ingested into the timing belt area. This condition is rare, but may happen when operating in very deep snow or during blizzard conditions.

The condition may not become apparent until the vehicle has been sitting in ambient temperatures below freezing for several hours, allowing melted snow or ice to refreeze in the timing belt area. When the vehicle is then started, the ice can cause the belt to skip one or more teeth.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 - Sealing Package PN 4419641

REPAIR PROCEDURE

It will be necessary to install a timing belt sealing package to prevent reoccurrence of this condition.

1. Check camshaft timing as follows:

Engine Will Not Start

A. Remove access plug from timing belt cover. Turn engine to #1 cylinder top dead center (use timing marks for reference).
B. Looking through the access hole in the timing cover, check the location of the timing hole (if visible) in the camshaft sprocket. If the hole is centered with the access hole in the cover the camshaft is timed properly.

NOTE: THE HOLE WILL NOT BE VISIBLE IF THE CAMSHAFT SPROCKET IS MORE THAN TWO NOTCHES OUT OF TIME.

C. If the camshaft timing is wrong, retime as per service manual procedures.

D. If the engine will not start, the belt could have skipped on the intermediate shaft, causing incorrect ignition timing.

E. Verify this condition by turning the engine to #1 cylinder T.D.C. Remove the distributor cap and check the position of the rotor. If rotor is out of the #1 cylinder firing position, it will be necessary to correct the intermediate shaft timing. Refer to the service manual for intermediate shaft timing procedures.

2. When camshaft and intermediate shaft timing has been verified, install the parts in kit, PN 4419641, as follows:

A. Remove existing timing upper timing belt cover.

B. For standard non-turbo valve covers, trim the valve cover end seal pull tabs 1/16" from the cover surface.

C. Clean all grease and oil from the side seal area with Mopar Brake and Carburetor Cleaner, PN 4318037. Allow to dry.

D. The valve cover closure supplied in the kit is rectangular foam seal that is 9-1/2" long.

Standard valve covers - use as is (9-1/2" length). Turbo valve covers - cut to 8-3/4" length.

Remove the protective tape from the adhesive. Install the foam closure with the adhesive side toward the valve cover as shown in Figure 1.

E. Remove the styrofoam block from the engine support bracket and install the new foam closure supplied in the kit (Figure 2).

F. Install the timing belt upper cover supplied in the kit (Figure 3).

NOTE: TRANSFER THE CUP PLUGS FROM THE OLD TIMING BELT COVER TO THE NEW ONE. IF THE PLUGS ARE MISSING, INSTALL NEW ONES.

G. Install the cylinder block-to-water pump closure as shown in Figure 4.

H. Clean the head surface adjacent to the timing belt cover above the water pump. Install the closure as shown in Figure 5.
