Steering Column Removal and Installation

On Chrysler models equipped with the Driver Airbag Restraint System, it is necessary to follow special procedures when servicing steering column components. These procedures are necessary to avoid accidental deployment of airbag which may cause damage or personal injury.
1. Refer to image above for steering column removal, noting the following:
a. Disconnect battery ground cable.
b. Remove horn pad (1), then disconnect horn contact connector.
c. Remove steering wheel attaching nut, then using steering wheel puller tool No. DT-1001-A or equivalent, remove steering wheel (2). Do not hammer on steering wheel to remove, as the collapsible mechanism may be damaged.

2. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Align cut of joint socket with bolt hole of clamp (11).
b. Torque steering shaft to gearbox bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs.
c. Apply Mopar Lock N'Seal Adhesive part No. 4057989 or equivalent to dash panel cover bolt holes (9). Torque bolts to 6.5-10.0 ft. lbs.
d. When installing steering wheel (2), ensure front wheels are in the straight ahead position, align the three cancel pins with holes in steering wheel, then torque steering wheel locknut to 25-33 ft. lbs. Ensure turn signal lever cancels when steering wheel is turned in both directions.
