SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Convertible top cover exhibits a hole/slice in the C-pillar area on the right or left side of the vehicle, approximately 1-1/2" above the belt moulding and approximately 3-1/2" rearward of the quarter window (Figure 1). Models involved are as follows:

1987 & 1988 J-27 with updated stack assembly, P/N 4490926 1989 AJ-27 built prior to June 1, 1989, MDH 0601XX
DIAGNOSIS

Inspect the damaged C-pillar top cover area from the inside of the vehicle on each side, to determine which of the following two problems exist:

FIGURE 2:

HOLE - Inspect the quarter window glass run retainer
attaching screws to the linkage stack assembly. These screws should each have a rubber protective cap, P/N 4491698, screwed securely (bottomed) to them (Figure 2). If any of the protective caps are missing, damage to the top material in the form of a "HOLE" may result.

SLICE - Inspect the body side aperture belt
reinforcement extension for evidence of paint wear spots, or a tight/interference condition to the rear rail bracket linkage (outboard link only). This interference will cause damage to "baby bath" vinyl cover, and also result in a "SLICE" type cut in the top cover material.
Inspection should be done on both the right and left sides.
REPAIR PROCEDURE

This procedure involves removal and installation of the top and a modification to the rear rail bracket linkage (outboard link only), the body side aperture belt reinforcement extension and the folding top pivot bracket.

1. Remove damaged convertible top from vehicle and stack assembly.

2. Remove stack assembly from vehicle.

FIGURE 3:

3. Using Figure 3 as a guide and using a metal grinder, modify the folding top pivot bracket upper trim line as shown. Perform this step on both the right and left pivot brackets.

FIGURE 4:

4. Using Figure 4 as a guide and using a metal grinder, modify the rear rail bracket linkage (outboard link only) as shown. Perform this step on both the right and left rear rail bracket links.

FIGURE 5:

5. Using Figure 5 as a guide and using a metal grinder, modify the body side aperture belt reinforcement upper trim line as shown. Perform this step on both the right and left aperture belt reinforcements.
6. Install stack assembly on vehicle. If modified areas on the stack assembly and belt reinforcement extension do not line up exactly, use grinder to remove additional material to correct.

7. Smooth all surfaces to remove all burrs and sharp edges.

8. Paint surfaces to ensure rust and corrosion protection.

9. Install convertible top.

NOTE: BE SURE TO INSTALL AND TIGHTEN RUBBER PROTECTIVE CAPS P/N 4491698 ON ALL QUARTER WINDOW GLASS RUN RETAINER ATTACHING SCREWS.

10. Verify proper top operation.
